AIIMS: There was a crack in the aorta, doctors saved the woman’s life by doing surgery

Bhopal. AIIMS doctors gave a new lease of life to a 52-year-old woman by performing surgery for a rupture of her aorta. The woman, a resident of Satna, suddenly had severe chest pain and weakness on the left side of her body. As the patient’s condition deteriorated rapidly, he was taken to a private hospital in Nagpur. On examination, the patient was diagnosed with a ruptured aorta (a large artery that supplies blood to the entire body). The crack had spread to the arteries supplying blood to the patient’s brain and lower body. Due to this the patient developed acute kidney failure and brain stroke. 17-18 lakh rupees were to be spent for the surgery. Since the patient could not afford such an expensive treatment, his family members brought him to AIIMS Bhopal. Seeing the critical condition of the patient, he was immediately admitted to the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department. Was taken for surgery on the same day without any delay. The surgery was performed by the team of cardiac surgeons Dr Yogesh Nivariya, Dr M Kishan, Dr Surendra Singh Yadav and cardiac anesthesiologist Dr Molly Kiran. After a 12-hour long surgery, the patient was kept under observation in the cardiac surgery ICU. After the surgery, the patient’s condition gradually improved with normalization of kidney and brain function. The patient is now fully fit to be discharged.

Surgery on heart-lung machine

During the surgery, a large crack was detected in the patient’s aorta. The surgery was performed on a heart-lung machine. The patient’s heart was stopped and his body was cooled to 25 °C. The aorta was replaced by an artificial fabric graft.
