AIIMS: Esophageal was burnt by drinking toilet cleaner, doctors made new food pipe from large intestine

Bhopal. AIIMS doctors have done wonders. Gave a new life to a female patient who was unable to eat by mouth for 10 months by making a new alimentary canal. The woman’s esophagus was burnt after drinking toilet cleaner. Doctors at AIIMS created a new food pipe with the help of part of the large intestine. The operation which lasted for about nine hours was successfully completed by the team of doctors. Dr. Vishal Gupta, Dr. Lokesh Arora and Dr. Sajay Raj from the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Dr. Vikas Gupta, Dr. Ganakalyan, Dr. Rahul from the Department of ENT and Dr. Shikha Jain from the Department of Anesthesia were involved in this operation. The patient remained in ICU for about 10 days under the supervision of Dr. JP Sharma, Surgical ICU Incharge. After the restoration of the esophagus, the patient is now happy and after about 10 months he is able to eat and drink through his mouth.

Food was given through tube

Dr. Vishal Gupta told that the woman’s food pipe was severely burnt after drinking toilet cleaner. She was unable to even swallow water or her own saliva, let alone eat food with her mouth. The woman was dependent on feeding through a tube for survival. In this procedure, liquid food is passed directly into the small bowel.

The challenge was not to make a new diet

Dr. Lokesh Arora told that the patient did not eat or drink anything through his mouth for 10 months. Making the new alimentary canal was a really big challenge. Because his entire diet was not damaged due to acid and stomach was also damaged. A new food pipe was created with the help of a part of his large intestine. Which was pulled from his stomach, brought through the chest to the throat and a passage was also made between the stomach and the small intestine. This surgery is called colonic pull-up or pharyngeal coloplasty (pharyngo coloplasty).
