Haryana Legislative Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta has expressed objections to the Chandigarh Education Department’s notification that children from Panchkula and Mohali will not be admitted to pre-primary and pre-primary classes in the 2024-25 session. In this regard, he has written a letter to the UT Administrator of Chandigarh and Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit demanding reversal of this decision.

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Gyan Chand Gupta said that this decision of the Chandigarh Education Department was completely contrary to the right to education. The right to education should not be divided between regions. This would violate the right to education of innocent children of Panchkula and Mohali. Citing the national education policy, he said that the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is implementing an education policy across the country. This decision of the Chandigarh Education Department is also in contradiction to this initiative of the Prime Minister. In the letter, he wrote that Panchkula, Chandigarh and Mohali were in some sense State Capital Region (SCR). As the capital of Haryana and Punjab, Chandigarh has authority over both states. Before such decisions are made, the future of the children should be sensitively considered. He has called for this decision to be overturned.
