Bhagwan Singh Rana / Yamunanagar.North India’s largest plywood industry in Yamunanagar is being forced to buckle to cheap operations in Nepal, West Bengal and Bihar. The reason given is that due to increased timber prices and raw materials not available to meet demand, prices of plywood products from Yamunanagar are expensive and demand in other places including Gujarat and Maharashtra is starting to fall. Today there is a growing demand for cheap locations from Nepal, West Bengal and Bihar. If the government doesn’t take care of North India’s largest plywood industry, it is on the verge of a complete standstill.

According to the government, there are more than 400 small and large ply factories in the district. In which more than one lakh laborers work. At the same time, thousands of other people make a living by joining the district’s plywood industry. However, due to the huge rise in poplar prices and the unavailability of raw materials to meet demand, the economic situation of the plywood industry was already deteriorating. Now the cheap plywood and plywood boards entering the market from other places including Nepal have exacerbated the crisis in the plywood industry of north India’s largest Yamuna Nagar. As a result, production at the factories has stalled.

Production was stopped in 127 factories

Operators of the plywood industry state that due to the increase in prices of cheap plywood and wood sold on the market and the unavailability of raw materials to meet demand, production at 127 factories in the district has fallen and production capacity has been reduced at many factories . Due to the reduction in production capacity and the closure of factories, there is a possibility that workers working there will lose their livelihood.

Despite the improvement in quality, demand fell

Plywood Industry The plywood sheet produced in Yamunanagar is considered to be of better quality. Still, the demand for ply products made in Yamuna Nagar industry in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, UP and other places is decreasing due to availability of cheap ply from other places. Industry operators said that 18mm plywood shipped from Yamuna Nagar to other locations including Maharashtra costs 57.58 rupees per square foot including VAT and freight. While the sheet of plywood shipped from Nepal, Kerala and West Bengal to the above places costs a total of 47 rupees per square foot. These states are required to bear a freight cost of Rs.6 rupees per square foot to obtain plywood from Yamuna Nagar. On the other hand, from other places, including Nepal, a total of two rupees per square foot of freight has to be paid.

The plywood industry will take some time to recover

JK Bihani, head of Haryana Plywood Manufacturing Association, said that in places like Nepal, West Bengal and Bihar, the price of wood is low and there is no market fee. As a result, wood is available cheaply there. As a result, the layer price is cheap. But six months ago, popular wood was being sold here for 700 to 800 rupees per quintal. Today prices have risen to 1600-1700 rupees per quintal. At the same time, the yield of poplar wood has also decreased. Because of this, the crisis in the plywood industry is intensifying. In order to overcome the plywood industry crisis, the government should provide other ways, including lowering the market fee for wood.
