Narnaul: Anemometers were installed by the Railway Authority to measure wind speed at 33 North Western Railway stations to ensure safe operation of double stack containers on windy stretches and major railway bridges. We would like to inform you that strong winds are currently blowing in most of the state of Rajasthan and some areas of Haryana state bordering Rajasthan and the Meteorological Department is issuing constant strong wind and rain warnings. Under these circumstances, there is a possibility that safety will be affected due to the imbalance of double-stack containers (deck containers) due to the high wind speed in the railway sections where double-stack containers operate. Therefore, in coordination with the meteorological department, anemometers were installed on behalf of the railway to measure the wind speed in such track sections.

According to the railway, an alarm with an anemometer sounds at a wind speed of more than 50 kilometers per hour and there is also an alarm message on the mobile phone, which informs the station master. At this time, the operation of double-stack container trains will be suspended for some time, so that unwanted accidents can be avoided. In such a situation, rail operations were protected by installing anemometers at stations. At 12 stations (Rewari, Kund, Mirzapur Bachhod, Nizampur, Maunda, Kanwat, Ringas, Pachar Malikpur, Khandel, Phulera, Sakhun and Kishangarh) of the North Western Railway’s double-stack container rail sections, namely the Rewari-Reingas-Phulera-Madar Anemometer section were installed.

The train departs when the wind speed is normal

Captain Shashi Kiran, North-Western Railway’s chief public relations officer, said the anemometer is being continuously monitored by the station manager in charge and the PWI. Train traffic with double-stack containers will be stopped at stations if the wind speed exceeds 50 km/h. If a train is in the middle section with high wind speed, the train will be brought to the station at a maximum speed of 30 km/h immediately after notifying the train driver/attendant via the available means of communication. After that, the train will not be sent on until the wind speed becomes normal.

What is an anemometer?

Anemometer is a device (instrument) for determining the speed, intensity, amplitude and direction of the wind. The parts of an anemometer include three to four cups that attach to the horizontal arms of the most common type of anemometer. A vertical bar is attached to the arms. When the wind blows, the cups rotate, causing the pole to rotate. The stronger the wind blows, the faster the rod turns.
