Karnal by-election 2024: Relief for Haryana govt, petition against CM Saini’s by-election rejected in Supreme Court

Karnal by-election 2024: The Haryana government has received major relief from Punjab and the Haryana High Court. The Supreme Court has rejected the petition challenging the by-election of the Karnal Assembly seat. With the cancellation of this petition, the way is clear for a by-election for the Karnal Assembly seat. However, the court made this decision precisely in a dispute of public interest. The court had previously reserved the decision on Monday after hearing all parties.

There were calls to cancel the by-election

A petition has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking cancellation of the by-election to the Karnal Assembly seat. The petition demanded that the elections be canceled on the grounds that the term of the Haryana Assembly was less than a year. The petition is based on the recent decision of the Nagpur Bench of the Mumbai High Court to cancel the Akola by-election in Maharashtra. The Mumbai High Court had ordered cancellation of the Akola by-election as the term of Parliament is less than a year.

Let us inform you that this seat of Karnal is lying vacant after the resignation of Manohar Lal Khattar from the post of Chief Minister and Assembly seat. After this, BJP appointed Naib Saini as the new CM of Haryana. In such a situation, Naib Saini has to become MLA within six months to remain CM of Haryana as the Haryana Assembly term has more than six months left. This is why the BJP has named Naib Saini as its candidate for the Karnal Assembly. In such a situation, it is necessary for CM Nayab Saini to contest and win the elections to remain in office.
