In the district of Yamuna Nagar in Haryana, the trend among farmers to plant poplars has increased again. The reason for this is assumed to be the high demand for papules and the enormous jump in prices.

At the same time, the farmers also see the cultivation of mixed cultures of turmeric, wheat, sugar cane, ginger and fodder as a reason for this, as well as the cultivation of poplars. This is why the farmers planted poplar seedlings on about 32,000 acres in the district this time. This is a record in the last ten years. Notably, about 10 percent of the plywood mills, which were on the brink of closure due to the decline in cottonwood planting in the county, are now hoping to revive by planting cottonwood in the fields.

Farmers were disillusioned with low prices

In Yamuna Nagar district, which became famous for growing poplars in the 1990s, farmers were disillusioned with growing poplars as the price of poplars had risen from Rs 200 to Rs 350 per quintal in recent years. Due to the huge drop in prices, the acreage in the district has been reduced to around eight to ten thousand acres. The plywood industry was also affected by the decline in poplar cultivation, and about 10 percent of plywood factories were on the verge of closure. But now, due to the enormous rise in the price of poplars in recent months, the trend among farmers to grow poplars has increased again.

There was a big jump in Papular’s prices

In Lakkar Mandi in Yamuna Nagar district, the inferior papular, which was selling for 1,000-1,200 rupees per quintal a month ago, is now being sold for more than 1,600 rupees per quintal. Similarly, Under Poplar, which used to sell for Rs. 400-600 per quintal, has now reached Rs. 750-850 per quintal.

rising demand

There are about 400 small and large plywood factories in the district. In which millions of tons of poplar wood are consumed every day. On average, about 800 to 1000 tractor carts filled with papules are bought and sold in Yamuna Nagar and Jagadhari Lakkar Mandi. In addition, poplar wood in other vehicles from the neighboring states of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab is to be sold in Yamunanagar. Which is consumed in plywood factories.

Growing poplars has a double benefit

Bharatiya Kisan Union Secretary of State Rambir Singh Chauhan says the farmers’ economic situation will be strengthened by the rise in poplar prices. On the other hand, farmers can get double benefits by growing crops like sugar cane, wheat, turmeric, ginger, and fodder alongside poplar. For this reason, most of the farmers in the district have increased the poplar acreage in their fields this time.

Plywood mills will benefit

JK Bihani, head of the Haryana Plywood Manufacturing Association, says that as poplar cultivation increases, plywood mills will be able to get wood on demand. This allows the plywood mills to achieve their set goal and produce smoothly.
