Delhi Water Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj on Friday claimed that his government will completely clean the Yamuna by 2025 under a six-point action plan. In a press conference on Friday, Saurabh said that one of the primary objectives of the government is to achieve complete self-sufficiency in sewage treatment. By December 2023, Delhi will achieve this milestone of 813 MGD, with increased sewage treatment capacity. In addition, by June 2024, sewage treatment capacity in Delhi will increase by 21 per cent to reach 964 MGD, providing a significant buffer to future requirements.

Saurabh informed that 4,08,183 households have already been provided free sewer connections under the initiative of the Kejriwal government. Significant progress has been made since 2015, with the addition of 619 new unauthorized colonies in the sewer network, taking its number from 220 to 839. In addition laying of 2,371 km of sewer line with total length of 9800 km, procurement of 200 sewer cleaning machines, and treatment of 174 MGD sewage has been done taking the total to 574 MGD. To strengthen sewage treatment infrastructure, the government will soon commission sewage treatment plants at Okhla, Kondli and Rithala.

Cleaning of 110 KM trunk sewer lines by 2024

Saurabh informed that these plants will add a capacity of 95 million gallons per day to Delhi’s sewage treatment network. In addition, work on the de-silting project of Najafgarh drain is in progress, of which 36 km has already been completed. The government aims to divert major drains and all sub-drains to STPs by the end of 2023, which will improve sewage treatment significantly. The Delhi Jal Board has also taken over the responsibility of upgrading 13 Common Effluent Treatment Plants from the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation. In addition, the government will completely clean 110 km of trunk sewer lines by March 2024.
