The election for the mayor is to be held today i.e. on Wednesday, February 22, by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Earlier three such attempts have been made, but this crucial election had to be postponed due to uproar by Bharatiya Janata Party and Aam Aadmi Party councillors. After three failed attempts, the stage is now set for the Supreme Court-ordered elections and it is expected that Delhi will get a new mayor today.
Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had approved the convening of the meeting of the Corporation House last week. After which the date of election for the posts of mayor, deputy mayor and six members of the standing committee was fixed on February 22 today. The Supreme Court, while hearing the matter, had said that the members nominated by the Lieutenant Governor in the MCD cannot vote. Regarding the Delhi Mayor election, the Aam Aadmi Party tweeted and wrote, today Delhi is going to get its Mayor after one year. We hope that BJP will respect SC’s decision without hooliganism and conduct elections in a peaceful manner.
* After MP Meenakshi Lekhi, Ramesh Bidhuri, Hans Raj Hans, now MLAs will vote. After the post of mayor, there will be election for deputy mayor and standing committee.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated Rekha Gupta and Kamal Bagdi as its candidates for the elections to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Whereas, Aam Aadmi Party’s mayoral candidate is Shelly Oberoi.
