New Delhi:The Delhi government is working on action mode to get rid of Delhiites from the garbage mountains of Delhi. CM Arvind Kejriwal himself is monitoring the disposal of garbage from the landfill site. In this context, the CM visited the Bhalswa landfill site on Thursday. During this, the CM announced that by March next year, the mountain of garbage will be finished from Bhalswa. This was the Chief Minister’s second visit to the Okhla landfill site this month. During this, the CM understood the process of eliminating the garbage from the site and directed the MCD to work at double the speed to eliminate the entire garbage by March-April next year so that the residents living here can get pure air and Delhi becomes clean and tidy. can be made beautiful.

The CM said that 30 lakh metric tonnes of garbage will be picked up from Bhalswa by December and will finish the entire garbage by March-April 2024. Work on landfill sites is going on at double the speed than before and soon we will make Delhi garbage free. Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj, MCD Mayor Dr Shelly Oberoi, Deputy Mayor Aale Iqbal, MCD Commissioner and local MLA and senior officials were present on the occasion. The CM said that now we have set a target of removing 30 lakh metric tonnes of garbage by December 2023. We are hopeful that by March-April next year, the remaining 50 lakh metric tonnes of waste at the landfill site will be removed.

The CM further said that now the work is going on at twice the speed of the earlier speed of garbage removal. I have reviewed it as well. Earlier, 6500 metric tonnes of garbage was being picked up daily from here. But from yesterday (Wednesday) 9 thousand metric tonnes of garbage is being picked up. At the same time, by the end of this month, the speed of garbage collection will be doubled and about 12-13 thousand metric tonnes of garbage will start being lifted daily. Garbage collection is going on at twice the target speed at the site. We hope to lift 30 lakh metric tonnes of waste from the Bhalswa landfill site by December 2023. After this, by March-April 2024, the entire garbage will be removed from the landfill site.

In the last 30 years Bhalswa landfill became a mountain of garbage

During the tour of Bhalswa landfill site, CM Arvind Kejriwal said that in the last 30 years, the Bhalswa landfill site has become a big garbage mountain. The garbage of entire Delhi comes here. The work of removing this garbage mountain is going on. Garbage removal started from here in 2019 after NGT’s order. At that time, about 80 lakh metric tonnes of waste was present at the Bhalswa landfill site. From 2019 till date, 30 lakh metric tonnes of garbage has been removed. While at present 50 lakh metric tonnes is lying on the site. In about two-and-a-half years, 30 lakh metric tonnes of garbage has been removed.

New incoming garbage is being disposed continuously

CM Arvind Kejriwal said that separate arrangements have been made for the new waste coming to the landfill site. Additional arrangements have been made to dispose of the newly arrived garbage and it is being disposed of continuously. About 11,000 metric tonnes of garbage is generated daily in Delhi. Out of that, we have arrangements for disposal of more than 8100 metric tonnes of garbage. At the same time, about 2800 metric tonnes of garbage is being saved daily. For this, the work of increasing the additional capacity of one thousand metric tonnes is going on in Okhla.

To dispose of this waste, a two thousand metric ton waste to energy plant is being built in Bawana, which will be ready by 2026. Till then we have made a temporary arrangement to dispose of new waste daily. 10,000 metric tons of legacy waste is generated from the Bhalswa site every day and 2,000 metric tons of waste is disposed of every day. He said that segregation can also happen in garbage houses. But there is no segregation in many houses. It is not possible to change the culture of the entire city at once. We also segregate the garbage that we collect. Now a lot of waste can also go directly into Waste to Energy.

Bhalswa landfill site is 28 years old

The Bhalswa landfill site is a 28 year old site. It is spread over 70 acres. The height of this landfill was 65 meters from the ground. When the survey was conducted in 2019, it was found to have 80 lakh metric tonnes of garbage. Since then 24 lakh metric tonnes of new waste has been dumped at the site and 30.48 lakh metric tonnes of waste has been biomined there. During biomining, legacy waste is separated into three components, inert waste, construction and demolition waste, and refuse derived fuel. Out of this, the inactive and C&D waste is being used for backfilling of vacant land in NHAI projects in and around Delhi. The waste derived fuel is being used in cement factories, power plants and plastic recycling plants.

Garbage from Okhla landfill site will be cleared by December

Earlier, CM Arvind Kejriwal visited the Okhla landfill site on March 3 to review the garbage disposal process. The target to clear the garbage from the Okhla landfill site has been set by May 2024, but the CM has directed the officials to expedite the work and clear it by December 2023. There is about 40 lakh metric tonnes of waste at the Okhla landfill site. The capacity to excavate the garbage from the site is 17 thousand metric tonnes per day. But its disposal capacity is about 1000 metric tonnes per day. CM Arvind Kejriwal has directed to increase the capacity of garbage disposal to 15 thousand metric tonnes per day. Work on this is going on fast and it is expected that from June 1, 15,000 metric tonnes of garbage can be disposed of daily from the Okhla landfill site.
