Supreme Court on MP and MLAs Criminal Cases:� The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the criminal cases pending in the court against MPs and MLAs. The Supreme Court has said that the criminal cases pending in the court against MPs and MLAs should be disposed of expeditiously. For this, the Supreme Court has issued guidelines on Thursday.
According to media reports, the Supreme Court says that it will be difficult for it to make uniform guidelines for trial courts related to speedy disposal of cases against MPs and MLAs. In such a situation, the Supreme Court has asked the High Courts to take suo motu cognizance and register cases for effective monitoring and disposal of cases related to MPs and MLAs.
The Supreme Court’s decision states that the High Court will set up a special bench to monitor criminal cases against lawmakers. Which will be presided over by either the Chief Justice. Or otherwise by a bench nominated by the Chief Justice. The Supreme Court has also directed the High Court to call special lower courts to report on the status of cases against MPs in criminal cases. The trial courts will not adjourn the hearing of cases against Members of Parliament, MLAs and MLCs except for rare and compelling reasons.

According to reports, the Supreme Court bench was hearing a PIL, which was filed through lawyer Ashwani Dubey. In which, apart from demanding life imprisonment on politicians if convicted in criminal cases, relief like speedy trial of accused MPs and setting up of special courts for the purpose have been sought.
