Sandeep Lamichhane Sentenced To Jail :Former Nepal cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane has been sentenced to 8 years in jail after being found guilty of raping a minor. A single bench of Justice Shishir Raj Dhakal gave this order to the Kathmandu District Court on Wednesday. Court information officer Chandra Prasad Panthi said Sandeep was also fined 3 lakh Nepalese rupees (1,87,148 Indian rupees) and ordered to pay 2 lakh Nepalese rupees to the victim’s family.
Sandeep Lamichhane, who was arrested after a minor accused him of raping her in a Kathmandu hotel room in August last year, was released on bail by a Nepal court in January.
A joint bench of Patan High Court Justice Dhruvraj Nanda and Ramesh Dhakal had decided to release Sandeep Lamichhane on bail of Rs 20 lakh, overturning the decision of the Kathmandu District Court. This 23-year-old cricketer was also banned from leaving the country till the final decision of the court in this case.
In February last year, the players of the Scotland cricket team had refused to shake hands with Lamichhane after the defeat in a match against Nepal. The Scottish players shook hands with every Nepal player except Lamichhane as a silent protest against the spinner’s continued presence and participation in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 series, which also included Namibia. Lamichhane was informed in advance about the protest.
Lamichhane was the first cricketer from Nepal to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he debuted for Delhi Capitals in 2018. He is the second fastest bowler to take 50 wickets in ODI. At the same time, he is the third fastest bowler to reach this milestone in T20. Lamichhane played his last international match against Kenya in August last year.
