Chhattisgarh
In Chhattisgarh, Jai Chhattisgarh Party, Chhattisgarh Vikas Party, Gondwana Ganatantra Party, Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha, Chhattisgarh Samaj Party etc. regional parties have been entering the fray. Only BSP has been showing its special presence by winning some seats. Talking about SP, tried several times, but could not get any success except during Janata Dal-Congress’s influence. Something similar happened with The National People’s Party. Former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma formed this party, at that time leaders of many parties joined this party, but the organization could not expand. In such a situation, many leaders joined the Congress.
If we talk about BJP, it got power in 2008 with the help of tribal seats, but in 2013 assembly elections, BJP could not get desired support from tribal society. Although the BJP regained power due to the vote bank of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, but like the tribal society, no one could become a prominent leader of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes society.
Ajit Jogi’s party also could not run
Due to the political situation in the state, Congress leader Ajit Jaegi was confident that if we form a separate party, he would be able to serve the people of the state. In view of this, he left Congress and formed Janata Congress Chhattisgarh. His party forged an alliance with BSP, Communist Party and Apna Dal to defeat Congress and BJP. Although the Janata Congress Chhattisgarh did not get a big advantage, but the position of the BSP definitely got stronger. The vote share of BSP has been 6-4% in the last three elections.
Regional parties remained disappointed even in 2018
In 2018, the Congress party made a comeback and formed the government by winning 68 seats in Chhattisgarh. At the same time, the BJP, which was in power for 15 years, was reduced to only 15 seats. Janata Congress Chhattisgarh got five seats and BSP got 2 seats. The Congress had won with a huge majority, due to which no regional party even had a chance to form the government with the BJP.
What is the status of regional parties in other states?
Mizoram
Mizoram has had political stability since 1989. Since then, either the Congress has formed the government here or the Mizo National Front (MNF) party has formed it. MNF has been in power since 2018. This government is running under the leadership of Zoramthanga, he has become the Chief Minister for the third time. Bharatiya Janata Party and ZPM participated in the 2018 assembly elections. The ZPM contested eight of the 35 seats. The BJP fielded its candidates in 39 constituencies, but managed to win only one seat.
Madhya Pradesh
In 2018 elections, Congress got 114 seats, BJP 109, BSP 2, SP got 1 seat. The Congress government was formed, but Kamal Nath’s government fell within 15 months. Kamal Nath resigned before the floor test. Jyotiraditya Scindia joined BJP along with several MLAs. After this Shivraj Singh Chouhan from BJP became the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. In this election, the vote share of Congress increased by 8% to 41% and that of BJP was more than 41%. Here also the regional parties could not perform anything special.
Rajasthan
In 2008, the Congress party won 96 out of 200 seats and formed its government with 6 BSP MLAs. In the 2018 elections, 99 candidates of Congress and 77 of BJP registered their victory while 6 candidates of BSP and 21 candidates of others got the stamp of victory.
The morale of the Congress party has increased after the Karnataka election results. Even after the election campaign of Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah, BJP’s magic could not work in Karnataka. The JDS, which calls itself the King Maker, was reduced to 19 seats. The Congress alone secured an absolute majority with 135 seats. Bharatiya Janata Party got just 66 seats in its account. Be it JDS in Karnataka, MNF in Mizoram, SP-BSP etc. in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, regional parties have been playing an important role. In such a situation, in the coming elections, all the national parties will be looking for alliance with other regional parties.
