Manipur High Court order challenged in Supreme Court.

Dinganglung Gangmei, chairman of the hill areas committee of the Manipur Assembly, on Saturday approached the Supreme Court challenging the March 27 verdict of the Manipur High Court. In which the state government was asked to submit a recommendation for granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Meitai community. The petition states that the Meitei community is not a tribal group and can never be recognized.

Demand to quash Manipur High Court’s order

The petition against the order of the High Court said that this order is completely wrong and should be quashed. The High Court should have seen that this was a political matter in which it had no role to play and political matters should have been resolved politically. It said that the matter of inclusion of Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes was pending for almost 10 years. He said in the petition that the Meitei community is an advanced type. However, some of them may fall under the category of Scheduled Castes (SC) or Other Backward Classes (OBC). According to the petitioner, no recommendation has been made by the state government to include the community in the ST list. Nor has this issue been placed before the Central Government.

Know what is the matter

Manipur State (Manipur) Violence broke out following the High Court’s direction. On April 19, the Manipur High Court had said in one of its judgments that discussions should be held to include the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes. The people of the Meitei community had filed a petition in the High Court, pleading to include them in the Scheduled Tribe category. Tribal groups are fiercely opposing this decision given by the High Court. They fear that if the Meitei community is included in the Scheduled Tribes, their land and resources will be illegally encroached upon.
