Today is a historic day for Karnataka. On May 10, 72.82 percent people voted in 224 assembly seats in the state. This time a total of 2,615 candidates have tried their luck in the elections. Counting of votes will be done at 36 centres. The election results will decide the fate of several heavyweights including BJP’s Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Congress heavyweights Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar and JD(S)’s HD Kumaraswamy. Today’s results will be very important for all three ruling BJP, opposition Congress and regional party JD(S). As the counting of votes got underway, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai expressed confidence that the BJP would win a second term in power in the state. Earlier in the day, Bommai visited a Hanuman temple and offered prayers. It has become a flashpoint with the BJP following the Congress party’s proposed ban on right-wing outfit Bajrang Dal.

Counting begins, fate of 2615 candidates in limbo

The counting of votes for all the 224 assembly seats in Karnataka began at 8 am. Polling officials were seen opening the strong room to take out EVMs and postal ballots. Strict security arrangements have been made in and around the polling booth to avoid any kind of incident.

Congress leader and former CM Siddaramaiah’s son Yatindra Siddaramaiah said that the Congress party will get absolute majority in the state and form its government. Also, he said that we are confident that we will form the government on our own.

Kumaraswamy said – hope for development

Regarding the assembly elections, JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy said that the picture here will be clear in the next 2 to 3 hours. He said exit polls show that both the national parties will score massively. Exit polls have given JDS 30 to 32 seats. Kumaraswamy said that we are a small party and we do not have any demand. The party is only expecting good development. HD Kumaraswamy said that till now no party has contacted me.

The Karnataka Police has made tight security arrangements ahead of the counting of votes for 224 assembly seats in the state today.
