Jasprit Bumrah: ‘Will you play Test cricket…’ How did the legend’s phone call change Jasprit Bumrah’s fate? Today he is the number 1 bowler of Test

New Delhi. Jasprit Bumrah has recently become the world’s number-1 bowler in Tests for the first time. He is the first Indian pacer to achieve this feat. Bumrah reached the position which legendary fast bowlers like Kapil Dev could not achieve in just a few years.

Bumrah took 9 wickets in the Visakhapatnam Test against England. He took 6 wickets in the first innings of this match. After this performance, Bumrah became the best bowler in the test.

Bumrah may be the number 1 bowler in Tests today. But, initially he was considered only a bowler of white ball cricket. But, a phone call from former Team India coach Ravi Shastri changed Bumrah’s fate. It was Shastri who made Bumrah’s Test debut during the 2018 South Africa tour. Shastri had recently narrated the incident related to Bumrah’s Test debut in an interview to former England captain Michael Earthton.

In this interview, Shastri recalled the phone call he made to Bumrah to know about his inclination towards Test cricket.

I had asked Bumrah whether he would play Test cricket: Shastri
Shastri said, "I remember the first time I called him, he was in Kolkata. I asked him if he was interested in Test cricket. He said it would be the biggest day of his life. In fact, Bumrah was declared a limited overs cricketer without even asking him. But, I knew. I wanted to see how hungry they were. I told him to be prepared. I am going to debut you in South Africa."

‘Bumrah was excited about playing test cricket’
Shastri revealed that Jasprit Bumrah was excited to play Test cricket with former captain Virat Kohli, who was also the captain when Bumrah made his debut. Shastri said, "He was desperate to play Test cricket with Virat Kohli. They know, at the end of the day, no one remembers the white ball average. Your numbers in Test cricket will always be remembered.

Bumrah will play the third test against England
At present, Bumrah is the vice-captain of the Indian Test team. He has also been selected in the Indian team for the last 3 tests against England. This clearly means that Bumrah will play in the third test. Bumrah is the highest wicket-taker in the current Test series against England. He has taken 15 wickets in 2 tests.
