The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 15-member Indian squad for the World Test Championship final against Australia at the Oval in London in June. Rohit Sharma will lead the team against Australia in the WTC Final. The match will be played at The Oval in London from June 7 to 11.
Veteran batsman Ajinkya Rahane has returned to the team after a stellar performance in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. All-rounder Shardul Thakur has also been selected in the 15-member squad. Rahane was dropped from the Test team after the tour of South Africa in January last year and has since struggled for form in red-ball cricket. However, Rahane did well for Mumbai in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season. He scored 634 runs in 7 matches at an average of 57.63. Ajikya Rahane has scored 209 runs in just five innings for CSK at an impressive strike rate of 199.05.
Left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat has retained his place in the 5-man pace attack, which also features Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Umesh Yadav. Spin bowling all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Akshar Patel have retained their places in the team. However, it is unlikely that all three will play together. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, the onus will be on Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj to lead the pace attack.
Shubman Gill is expected to open the innings alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, while KL Rahul has also been included in the squad. Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan, who was part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has been dropped.
