Kuldeep Yadav vs Axar Patel, IND vs ENG 1st Test: The first match of the 5 Test series is being played between India and England in Hyderabad. England won the toss and decided to bat first. Ben Duckett and Jack Crowley have given England a fast start. The Indian team has also entered this test with three spin bowlers like England.
There was no doubt in Team India regarding the first two spin bowlers. The place of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja was confirmed. But, there was a problem regarding the third spinner. The question was in front of everyone that who would Rohit give a chance to Kuldeep Yadav or Akshar Patel? This also became clear when the Indian playing-11 came out after the toss. Akshar got a place in the playing-11 in place of Kuldeep.
Captain Rohit Sharma explained the reason for selecting Akshar Patel at the time of toss. Rohit said, "It was tough (to drop Kuldeep Yadav), and we thought about it a lot. Axar, whenever he has played, has done well and bats really well in these conditions. He gives depth to the team’s batting. Last time we played against Australia, they scored very well. Maybe that’s why we went with letters."
Akshar got a place in the team because of Kohli: Kumble
Former Indian spinner Anil Kumble also linked Akshar’s inclusion in the playing-11 in place of Kuldeep to Virat Kohli’s absence. Kubale said that Kohli’s absence might have increased Rohit’s concerns about the team’s batting depth in the opening Test. Kohli has withdrawn from the first two Tests due to personal reasons.
‘There will be pressure on Rohit due to Virat’s absence’
Kumble said on Jio Cinema, "The pitch is more suitable for Kuldeep Yadav. The ball will not turn much here. But, will definitely roam. Akshar gives you some depth in batting and his record against England has also been good. He bowls wicket-to-wicket. Some of his balls may go straight and some may spin. Perhaps this is the reason why Akshar has got preference over Kuldeep. Virat’s absence has definitely put some pressure on Rohit Sharma. This is the first match after 12 years when you do not have (Cheteshwar) Pujara, Kohli, (Ajinkya) Rahane in the playing-11. This has definitely put some pressure on Rohit."
