New Delhi. Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has wholeheartedly welcomed the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to Team India for the T20 series against Afghanistan. Talking about the return of Rohit-Virat to the Indian T20 team, Gavaskar said that even if the performance of these two senior batsmen remains normal in IPL 2024, then they should be selected in the T20 World Cup team because of their experience.
Sunil Gavaskar said while talking to Star Sports, "I believe that IPL form is important to make a place in the T20 World Cup team because that will be the player’s current form. Afghanistan series is being played in January. At the same time, T20 World Cup is in June. In such a situation, the player who is in good form in March, April and May should definitely get preference."
Virat-Rohit should be in T20 World Cup team: Gavaskar
Gavaskar further said, "Apart from this, I would also like to say that if the performance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remains normal in IPL 2024. Meaning, if he scores runs in 4-5 matches out of 13-14 matches, then it should be accepted that he is scoring runs because you cannot score runs in every match. In such a situation, you should take advantage of the experience of these two players and select both Virat and Rohit in the T20 World Cup team."
Interestingly, Gavaskar also suggested that if Kohli and Rohit are ignored by the selectors for the T20 World Cup, they should at least be in the Indian dugout.
According to Gavaskar, "I would also say that, this being an out-of-the-box suggestion, you can take them on with the team as well. If you can’t pick him in 14(15) because of his experience. If Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are in the dugout, imagine what the confidence of the team will be."
