New Delhi. Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has said a big thing about Rishabh Pant. Gavaskar believes that Pant should be the wicketkeeper of the Indian team in the T20 World Cup to be held in June this year. Pant had undergone surgery after being injured in a road accident in December 2022 and his recovery is currently underway. Pant is set to return to the game for Delhi Capitals in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. But despite questions over his form, Gavaskar has advocated playing him in the T20 World Cup.
In response to a question asked about KL Rahul playing as a wicketkeeper in the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, Gavaskar said, "I also see him (KL Rahul) as a wicketkeeper but before that I will say one thing. If Rishabh Pant is fit even on one leg, then he should definitely come into the team because he is a game-changer in every format. If I were a selector, I would have kept his name first.
Gavaskar said on Star Sports, "If Rishabh Pant is not available and KL Rahul does wicketkeeping then it will be good as it will also create balance in the team. You then have the option of playing him as an opener or using him as a finisher at No. 5 or No. 6 in the middle order."
Gavaskar said that KL Rahul has improved a lot as a wicketkeeper. When Rahul was initially given the responsibility of wicketkeeping for the Indian team, he was not very interested in this role. When Gavaskar was asked whether IPL can solve the wicketkeeper debate for India for the 2024 T20 World Cup, he said that there are three players in the race and Jitesh Sharma is also good.
