Appointment of new acting director of ED.

ED Director: The government on Friday appointed Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Rahul Naveen as the director of the Enforcement Directorate. Rahul Naveen has replaced Sanjay Kumar Mishra. He left the post of ED because the Supreme Court had set a deadline. Sanjay Kumar Mishra worked as ED Director for about 4 years and 10 months.

Who is Rahul Naveen?

ED Director Naveen has now become the senior most officer. Apart from his role as Special Director, he also serves as the Chief Vigilance Officer of ED Headquarters. Naveen hails from Bihar and is known as a man of few words in the investigation agency, but is adept at using the pen. He will perform the responsibilities as acting director till the permanent appointment of the new director.

Ultimately Sanjay Kumar Mishra resigned

The appointment of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) director was being closely monitored as the Center did not want Sanjay Kumar Mishra to retire. He was appointed as the director of the law enforcement agency by the government in 2018 for a two-year tenure, but the government had given him consecutive service extensions.

During this time, the Center also brought an ordinance which allowed the tenure of ED and CBI directors to remain in office for a period of up to 5 years. Sanjay Kumar Mishra’s continuation on the post of ED Director was challenged several times in the Supreme Court and during the hearing, the apex court also pulled up the government. During his tenure the ED has been very active against the opposition parties. ED unearthed different money laundering cases and many leaders are in jail in financial cases.
