Jhajjar: Virendra Singh alias Gunga wrestler, a resident of Sasrauli village of Jhajjar, who has won five deaf medals in the Olympics for the country, once again came into the limelight on Wednesday. Earlier, in the Braj Bhushan and Bajrang controversy, the state and central government were shaken by announcing the return of medals in support of Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia returning their medals. Now expressing her displeasure over not getting the Khel Ratna, she wrote a post on social media platform X and shared it with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. In which it was written that being deaf and dumb is my crime, perhaps that is why even after winning five Olympic medals for the country, I neither got Khel Ratna nor Rs. 8 crores under the policy of Haryana Government. The disappointment of Virendra Singh aka Gunga Pehelwan for not getting the Khel Ratna is clearly reflected in the post written on X.
Started playing at the age of ten
Virendra Singh alias Gunga Pehalwan started wrestling at the age of about ten years. About a month and a quarter ago, he got injured in his hand during the World Wrestling Championship. After being discharged from the hospital, he started practicing in the Akhara with his injured hand. His dream is to win a medal for the country in the upcoming Deaf Olympics of 2025. Before this, he had won gold medal thrice and bronze medal twice.
Honored with these awards
For his achievements, he has also been honored with Bhim Award, Arjun Award, Padmashree and National Award by the government. Virendra Singh alias Gunga Pehalwan, who is working as a coach in the sports department and is on two-month leave due to a hand injury, has also been nominated for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna. Earlier, he had also come into limelight for supporting women wrestlers during their movement.
