Canada-India Relations: The rift between Canada and India is increasing. Meanwhile, Canada has expelled a diplomat from India. This entire matter is related to the murder of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. On behalf of the Canadian government, it was said that Indian diplomats were interfering in the investigation of the case. At the same time, PM Trudeau said in Parliament that there could be a conspiracy by India behind the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Canadian PM gave this statement
Trudeau said in the Ottawa Parliament on Monday that Canada has conveyed its deep concerns to top intelligence and security officials of the Indian government. The prime minister said he had raised those concerns personally and directly with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Group of 20 meeting in New Delhi last week. Additionally, he said the involvement of a foreign government in the murder of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is a violation of our sovereignty.
Indian diplomat expelled
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie on Monday expelled an Indian diplomat after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed a possible link between the Indian government and the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. The Foreign Minister said that the Indian intelligence chief in Canada has been expelled. He further said that Justin Trudeau had raised the issue of Nijjar’s murder with US President Joe Biden.
Relations between the two countries soured
Trudeau’s speech highlights the souring of relations between the two countries. Last week, following the prime minister’s meeting with Modi in the Indian capital New Delhi, Canada postponed a trade mission to India that had been planned for early October. Indian officials have long charged that Canada has been too cozy with Sikh separatists who want an independent Punjab separated from northwestern India.
