Australian Open: World No. 1 Novak Djokovic’s dream of winning the Australian Open for the 11th time shattered, out after losing in the semi-finals

New Delhi. Italy’s Yannick Sinner has caused a major upset in the Australian Open 2024. Sinner eliminated the world number-1 tennis player Novak Djokovic of Serbia from the tournament by defeating him in the semi-finals. With this victory, Yanik has reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. Sinner defeated Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 and 6-3 in this match that lasted 4 sets.

In the final, Sinner will face the winner of the second semi-final match between Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev. With this defeat, world number-1 tennis player Djokovic’s dream of winning the Australian Open Grand Slam for the record 11th time was shattered.

Sinner said after defeating Djokovic,"It’s always good to have a player like that who you can learn from. I lost in the semi-finals at Wimbledon last year and I learned a lot from him (Djokovic). Because of the confidence I gained last year, I felt that I can play with the best players in the world.

World number-1 tennis player Djokovic said after losing the semi-finals, "He (Sinner) deserves to reach the final. He completely defeated me. I played very poorly in the first two sets. I think it’s one of the worst Grand Slam matches I’ve ever played. At least that’s what I remember."

Djokovic had not lost a single match in the Australian Open since 2018. His winning streak continued for 33 matches. Whenever he has won the quarter-finals, he has won the Australian Open title.

Sinner is in tremendous form. He has won 19 of their last 20 matches and has won two ATP titles and the Davis Cup since October – and he defeated Djokovic in two of three meetings in the space of 12 days late last year.
