New Delhi. Indian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden have created history by winning the men’s doubles title of Australian Open. This is the first Grand Slam title of this pair. In the final of Australian Open, Bopanna-Ebden pair defeated Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavasori 7-6 (0), 7-5. With this, 43-year-old Bopanna has become the oldest player to win a Grand Slam tournament.

There was a tough match between the pair of Bopanna-Ebden and Boleli-Vavasori in the first set of the men’s doubles final of Australian Open. The first set saw a tie-breaker but Bopanna-Ebden won 7-6(0). Meanwhile, the Italians took an early lead in the second set, but the Indo-Australian pair staged a comeback to win it 7-5.

43 year old Rohan Bopanna has recently become world number-1 in men’s ranking. He was also recently selected for Padma Shri. Bopanna has become the oldest player to win a Grand Slam in the Open Era. He has won the Australian Open title at the age of 43 years and 329 days.

Before this victory, Rohan Bopanna had never won the men’s doubles title in a Grand Slam tournament. Earlier, Bopanna had reached the US Open final twice in 2013 and again in 2023. But, missed out on winning the title. The pair of Bopanna and Ebden had lost to Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury in the men’s doubles final of the US Open last year. However, Bopanna definitely won the French Open title in 2017 in mixed doubles. With this, Bopanna became the third Indian to win the doubles title of a Grand Slam tournament.
