Assam-Meghalaya Dispute: A big update is coming out regarding the Assam and Meghalaya border dispute. Today i.e. on Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya CM Konrad Sangma held a meeting on the border dispute. CM Sarma said after this meeting that out of 12 areas of dispute, we have settled 6 areas. Now our aim is to resolve the dispute of other 6 areas.

There was a dispute in total 12 areas

Meghalaya was made a separate state in the year 1972, which was earlier a part of Assam. After this Meghalaya challenged the Assam Reorganization Act 1971. Due to this, a dispute had arisen between the two states in 12 areas of the 884.9 km long border. This dispute is still going on. When Himanta Biswa Sarma became the Chief Minister of Assam, he had said that our priority is to resolve border disputes with neighboring states.

This is how the dispute of 6 areas was resolved

In order to resolve this dispute, fierce disputes were also seen in both the states many times. Meanwhile, in August 2021, three regional committees were formed to resolve this. The regional committees submitted their recommendations in the matter, which were submitted by the two chief ministers to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Subsequently, on March 29, 2022, an agreement was signed between the two states to resolve disputes in 6 out of 12 areas. According to this agreement, out of 36.79 square kilometers of disputed areas, Assam got control over 18.51 square kilometers and Meghalaya got control over 18.28 square kilometers for its settlement.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said this

On this occasion, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma while talking to the media said that we have resolved 6 areas of dispute between the two states. The Regional Committees have visited these 6 regions. CM said that in the month of June we will also visit Karbi Anglong and other areas for confidence building measures.

CM Konrad Sangma’s statement

Please inform that Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma was also present in this conference. He said that we had a very important meeting today. A beginning has been made towards finding solutions in the six areas of dispute. We have asked our 6 zonal committees to study it. We hope that this problem will be resolved soon.
