WPL 2023: Before the start of the Women’s Premier League, former India captain Anjum Chopra has raised questions on the teams of the league itself. Anjum Chopra is not happy with most of the foreign players captaining the team in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League. Anjum Chopra said that I did not like that most of the teams have chosen foreign players as captains. It is an Indian league and will be played in Indian conditions. In such a situation, if Indian players have the ability, then they should have been captains.
Deepti should have been made captain
Anjum Chopra said that I believe that Deepti Sharma should have been made the captain of UP Warriors. However, Anjum admitted that six-time T20 World Cup winners Australia have more experienced players than the Indians. He said that Australian players are world champions and they have experience of leading teams in their country. I completely agree with the experience of the Australian player. That’s why Jemimah Rodrigues cannot be made captain while Meg Lanning is there. In this case, if the big picture is seen, then Indian players do not have the ability of captaincy like Australian players. He said that it will always be challenging for the Indian players because you are playing a franchise based tournament in India.
Under-19 players will benefit
Anjum Chopra said that it would be a good opportunity for the domestic players to play with the legends of the game. He said that the bigger picture that I am seeing from this league is about the under-19 players. These players will go on to play franchise cricket after winning the Under-19 World Cup, where they will get to rub shoulders with the likes of Meg Lanning, Beth Mooney and Harmanpreet Kaur. We have to see how Indian domestic players perform. We know foreign players, but we don’t know much about Indian domestic players.
Anjum believes that WPL will bring a big change in Indian women’s cricket. He said that it was awaited for a long time, but finally the league has started. It’s not about preparing to beat Australia. It is about becoming a better cricketer. Let us tell you that Indian player Harmanpreet Kaur has been made captain by Mumbai Indians and Smriti Mandhana has been made captain by RCB.
