Vaccines have saved millions of lives and prevented serious disease in many people. In which field is Nobel Prize given?
The Nobel Prize was created by the wealthy Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who ordered in his will that his estate should be used to award prizes to those who had provided the greatest benefit to mankind during the previous year. Nobel Prize winners receive a diploma, a medal and 10 million Swedish krona.
Nobel died in 1895, but it took until 1901 after a fight over his will before the first prize was awarded. Nobel nominated the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to award the prizes for chemistry and physics, the Swedish Academy for literature, Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet Medical University for physiology or medicine, and the Norwegian Parliament for peace. Nobel Prize winners are awarded on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death.
