African Union becomes permanent member of G-20.
G20 Summit 2023:The G20 summit is being held today on 9 September at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition-Convention Center in New Delhi. Meanwhile, a big announcement has been made in this. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday formally announced the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G-20, a group of 20 countries. PM Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar welcomed African Union Chairman and Comoros President Azali Assoumani to officially attend the G-20 summit in Delhi.
India proposed to give permanent membership
India proposed to give permanent membership of G20 to the African Union. PM Modi said that I believe everyone has agreed on this. “With everyone’s consent, I request the African Union head to take his seat as a permanent G20 member,” he said in a formal announcement. The G20 gathering is expected to be renamed G21 after the African Union joins it. In recent years, deep divisions over the Russia–Ukraine conflict have made it difficult to build consensus among G20 members. This proposal to bring this major grouping of the Global South into the exclusive group of the world’s top economies was well received.
Competition between India and China to become the leader of ‘Global South’
The effort to get the African Union, an organization of 55 African countries, membership of the G-20 was also being seen as a competition between India and China to become the leader of the ‘Global South’. It is being claimed by China that it was the first to raise the demand for inclusion of African Union in G-20. Although similar claims were being made by Russia, India has given permanent membership of G-20 to the African Union.
