The weather has wreaked havoc on Malawi, a country with a population of only two crores. The recent storm Freddy in the African country has caused a lot of destruction. The storm dominated so much that till now about 326 people were killed. Along with this, the number of deaths is increasing.
The storm hit southern Africa over the weekend for the second time after first making landfall in late February. This storm is one of the longest lasting as well as one of the deadliest. Incessant rain and power outages this week have caused problems for search and rescue operations.
President of Malawi expressed grief
Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has called for 14 days of mourning for the victims and the government has pledged $1.5 million in aid, while more than 20,000 homes have been displaced by landslides and floods.
There is resentment among the local people
According to media reports, locals are organizing themselves into groups, recovering the bodies while waiting for help from the authorities. There is no rescue team, no police officer, no government official. Along with this, a local resident says, we do not even know what people are going to eat for lunch or dinner today. The situation is so bad that the storm has destroyed everything. He further said that we have not received any relief material from the government.
