What is Gharchola Saree?
Gharchola is made up of two words ‘Ghar’ (house) and ‘Chola’ (cap/cloth). The word Gharchola literally means ‘home attire’ or dress worn at home. However, the contextual meaning of the word is a bit complicated. Here ‘home’ refers to the bride’s new home, i.e. her husband’s home. It is traditionally used as odhani (shoulder cover) by women in Gujarat. After the third round, Gharchola is gifted to the bride by the mother-in-law. It indicates acceptance and welcome into the family.
