Prithviraj on Diwali to Laxmmi Bomb on Eid: 2020 is Akshay Kumar’s year

Akshay Kumar is having a splendid year so far. His last releases, Mission Mangal and Kesari, are among the highest grossers of 2019 and he is ready to entertain his fans with films like Housefull 4 and Good News, which are going to release this year. While he still has two more big releases in 2019, Khiladi Kumar seems to have shifted his focus on to the major festivals of 2020.

Three of Akshay Kumar's films will be releasing on three special days - Eid, Diwali and Christmas - in 2020. The Raghava Lawrence directorial, Laxmmi Bomb, which also stars Kiara Advani, is slotted for a May 22 release, coinciding with Eid, and Bachchan Pandey will hit the screens on Christmas next year.

And today, on his 52nd birthday, Akshay has booked Diwali for another release as well. Akshay took to social media to announce that he will take over the box office in and as Prithiviraj, on Diwali, next year. Directed by Chandra Prakash Dwivedi, Prithviraj is being produced by Yash Raj Films.

Here is everything one needs to know about Akshay Kumar's festive releases next year:

LAXMMI BOMB, EID

In Laxmmi Bomb, directed by Raghava Lawrence, Akshay will be seen playing the role of a man possessed by the ghost of a transgender. It is a remake of the Tamil film Kanchana. The actors are currently shooting for the film in Mumbai, which started in April this year. Buzz has it that Amitabh Bachchan might also appear as a transgender ghost in the film. Laxmmi Bomb also had its share of controversies. After the makers released the first poster of the film in May this year, Raghava Lawrence announced that he is stepping down as the director of the film. He said that the first poster was released without his knowledge. In a long note, shared on Twitter, he mentioned the reasons for which he was leaving the film. He, however, later reprised his role as the director of Laxmmi Bomb. Now, since everything is in place and the shooting is going as planned, Laxmmi Bomb is ready to tickle your funny bone on Eid, next year.

Laxmmi Bomb was earlier scheduled to release on June 5, but later it was preponed for an Eid release on May 22.

PRITHVIRAJ, DIWALI

Announced on Akshay Kumar's birthday, Prithviraj is based on the life of Rajput warrior Samrat Prithiraj Chauhan. It is scheduled to hit screens on Diwali next year. This will be the first time Akshay Kumar will be seen in a historical avatar of an Indian king. He had earlier featured in Kesari, a period drama revolving around Battle of Saragarhi. Prithviraj is said to be one of the biggest Akshay Kumar films. The film will be directed by Chandra Prakash Dwivedi, who is best known for both directing and acting in the titular role of Chanakya in the epic 1991 TV show of the same name. His other works as a director include Urmila Matondkar's Pinjar (2003) and Sunny Deol's Mohalla Assi (2018).

Speaking about Prithviraj, Akshay Kumar, in a statement, said, "Prithviraj was the only person standing in front of a merciless nemesis and the bravery he showed, made him a true Indian hero, an inspiration for generations and a legend. So this announcement coming on my birthday has indeed made it more special for me."

BACHCHAN PANDEY, CHRISTMAS

It was in July this year that Akshay Kumar took to social media to announce Bachchan Pandey. Sharing the first poster of the film, Akshay wrote, "Coming on Christmas 2020! In & As #BachchanPandey in #SajidNadiadwala’s Next, directed by @farhadsamji (sic)." Bachchan Pandey is the Hindi remake of the 2014 Tamil film Veeram.

Interestingly, the Akshay Kumar film will clash with Aamir Khan's Lal Singh Chaddha, which is also scheduled to hit screens on Christmas, next year. Lal Singh Chaddha is a remake of the Tom Hanks starrer Hollywood film, Forrest Gump. Recently, when Akshay was asked about the box office clash between the two films, he told Mumbai Mirror, "We have 52 Fridays in a year and even fewer holiday weekends. We make over 200 Hindi films a year while Hollywood releases 40 more and then there's the South industry and other regional cinema. So, we should be happy if we have two big releases in a week. This year, on the Independence Day weekend we had three, (Mission Mangal, Batla House, and Saaho) till one bowed out."

While Akshay has booked three major festivals in 2020, it is still to be seen if he will come up with another release on Independence Day. For the past seven years, the actor had made sure to come up with one film in the Independence Day week - Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara (August 15, 2013), Brothers (August 14, 2015), Rustom (August 12, 2016), Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (August 11, 2017), Gold (August 15, 2018) and Mission Mangal (August 15, 2019).

Given the track record, we wouldn’t be surprised if Akshay Kumar made another announcement soon.
